This is an American organization which was founded on 11 April 1953. It is a cabinet-level department of the U.S. federal government with the aim of protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services. Its motto is “Improving the health, safety, and well-being of America.” Before 1979, it was called the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C., the U.S. It provides social service programs, disaster preparedness programs, civil rights and healthcare privacy programs and health-related research. Some social service programs are for people with disabilities, low income, military families and senior citizens. Some of the challenges facing this organization regarding quality are overuse of services like over issuing of antibiotics in cases where they are not necessary like the treatment of bronchitis, misuse of services where for example in laboratory test results. Many smear results are incorrectly classified as normal and end up being very costly in the end. Such quality problems slow down the progress in health care.
