Free Gettsburg Address Coursework Example

Name Instructor’s Name Literature Date Gettysburg Address The American Civil War began in 1861 over a dispute on government's resolution on slavery which had divided the nation into free and slave states. In a bid to end this strife, on ascension to power, President Abraham Lincoln proposed a plan for the slow emancipation of slaves. The battle of Gettysburg of July 1863 would serve as a critical juncture to the end of the Civil War climaxed by the Gettysburg address. Lincoln first plants the idea of freedom which he would later cement with the formal emancipation of slaves. In the Gettysburg address, Lincoln stirs flashback in the minds of his audience. He reminds them of how they attained independence, cautioning them of the impending downfall of the once-united nation courtesy of the forgotten foundations CITATION Uni63 l 1033 (Cornell University np). He also acknowledges the work of their fallen predecessors and urges the people to dedicate themselves to the "unfinished work," a gesture for action to win the war. Lincoln designated the states in the Confederate that embraced his inkling of freedom to slaves and urged the Executive government to acknowledge the freed slaves. He asks the slaves to "abstain from all violence, in necessary self-defense" CITATION Sew63 l 1033 ("Emancipation Proclamation" np). This declaration would later lead slaves to flee the Confederate states to join the Union's military and navy in the fight for freedom denied by the Southerners. The two addresses were critical in ending the Civil War. The plan for the emancipation of the slaves and the battle of Gettysburg were the crucial events in this process. Lincoln strategically ended the Civil War both practically and idealistically. Works Cited BIBLIOGRAPHY l 1033 Cornell University. The Gettysburg Address. n.d. n.m. 2013. Web. 16 March 2018.
