Student’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Date Racism Nelson, Jacqueline, and Dunn (46) describe racism as the belief that one race is superior to the other which results in prejudice and discrimination towards individuals grounded on their ethnicity and race. We can also describe racism as an antagonism, bias or prejudice directed against people from different races believing that a particular race is superior to the other. Racism can affect anyone including at schools, public events, shopping centers and public transport. It mostly affects those people with inferior cultures and low income. Most of these people come from developing countries and face challenges when they mix with American people. Racism pits communities against one another which leads to division among people. Those in power would not like to be overpowered by those below them. People judge others regarding their color, religion and economic background. Such cases lead to the rise of tension and inequality among citizens which further divides the society. Causes of Racism Racism originates from the tendency in people to create racial labels based on color, religion, nationality, and race. Those who practice racial discrimination do not know how it is propagated and nurtured (Nelson, Jacqueline, and Dunn 47). Such things take place because the community and its founders had planted a seed of perception in our conscious before we started asserting our decisions. Serfdom and slavery have contributed significantly to racism in many countries. Some extreme cases of genocide occurred as a repercussion of racism. Many people and organizations lack awareness of the effects of racism. The media also promotes racism by giving false information, and most of it is white-washed. Social stratification can also cause discrimination because the poor are seen as lesser people who do not have rights.
